Simon Mall Gift Certificate? Valid more then a year in what states?

Hello,
I have a simon gift certificate that was issued DEC 23 of 2003. It says on it expires "1 year from date of issue except in states where prohibited by law." Well I live in MA and would like to know if it is prohibited in my state. And for that matter, is there some law in general (I have heard) that stores HAVE to still take gift certificates if they are expired?

i used a gc that was expired once, when i forgot about a gc i had ..
the cashier said it was fine. i used the gc about a week after the expiration date.

I'm from MA too and from what I understand, we have a state law that governs expiration dates on gift certs. My reading tells me that a cert must be valid for 7 years. Here's the law.
