I have an old DEH-P9300. It's a great head unit, but they all eventually fall victim to a fault with the wiring that makes it short out when attempting to eject a cd. I keep buying new ones off e-bay, but this is getting pricey. What would the modern equivalent of this head unit be?

like similar features or what? it looks like it's a basic one disc CD player so that leaves a lot of choice

The DEH-12E or 1200MP look like basic CD players too.

the 9300 was one of the greatest h/u's ever produced.

features, voltage, outputs, definitely want something with a BBE option, and at least a 12 band EQ.

800PRS? I don't have much experience with the other HUs outside the double-din I have and a couple other SQ HUs (Clarion 9255 and Pioneer P99RS come to mind).

Either the 800PRS or the 880PRS if you don't mind buying used. Or if you want to go all out the P99RS.

can't find an 800 or 880 anywhere unfortunately. 9800BT's are all over the place though

Must be gearing up for a new model then, or just like every other manufacturer out there, they kill off their top of the line units because of slow movement.

I found one place that has both the 880 and 800, but damn did they jack up the price. I paid less than 400 for my 880 a few years ago, now it's up to 550.

The 9800BT or 980BT is a nice unit, but I don't believe the DSP features are as robust as what the 880/800 offers.

I used to have an 8400, which looks pretty similar, but had a two piece, fold down faceplate... with a one line simple display on the outer, and when I opted to open it, the larger EL display was nearly filling the inner "faceplate"... Now, the reason why I mention this is because it suffered from a similar situation.... eventually, the ribbon cable that connected the outer face and buttons to the innards of the unit would fail and not allow basically anything to work... it would power up, unfold, and do nothing.

Fortunately, the first time this had failed, I was still under the extended warranty I bought with the unit... and when I had it repaired, I talked to the repair shop and found out the part number of the kit that Pioneer makes for this particular repair job. The job from a repair center was about $130-150, and the kit which also came with instructions could be had on ebay for about $15-20 SHIPPED!!

I would highly recommend looking into something like that... because in the life of that unit until I eventually sold it; I had done this exact repair myself about 3 times after it was professionally done... just one little ribbon cable saved me tons of time and lots of money... because I loved that unit and didn't want to spend a bundle on a newer model that did all the same stuff but in a form factor I didn't like as much as what I already had.

I ended up going with the 9800BT. I'm in grad school right now, and there are a lot on Ebay for around 300 bucks. Definitely an upgrade, and it'll hold me over til I'm making bank.
