Sim City 2000

I've got Sim City 2000 on floppy disk - it's still a cool game and I am introducing it to my ten year old daughter. It installed on my Athlon Xp system with a CRT, but on my Dell system (siggy) with LCD 19" monitor, my screen goes black when I run the install program.

Do I have to switch to 640x480 res to install this game? Do I need special drivers? Has anyone tried running this game on a "modern" computer with an LCD?

Help!

Is this the DOS version of the game? You might have to try runnng the setup in compatibility mode, or even using DOSBox.

I have the win95 version, and it will run under XP.

Yes, this is the DOS version of the game. It did install successfully on my 2nd rig with CRT, and seems to run fine except for there is no sound.

I tried the install in the Command prompt window, and the screen went black when I ran the install.exe file.

I just tried sending the install.exe to the desk top and in compatability tab set to Win95 and 640x480 res. But it still went black wen I ran the install. It's wierd, it installed fine on my Athlon XP box with the CRT monitor. I wonder if it has to do with my LCD?

Dosbox may be unnecessary since the DOS version of the game worked fine on my other WinXP machine. It also looks like I'd have to play the game in small window too.

There must be some other issue with the LCD vs CRT. I couldn't get MYST:Riven to run on my LCD computer either. but it will run on my system with a CRT. It's looking like CRT's are still needed.

It might be some incompatibility with your hardware. Your Dell has a P4 3.2 so it has Hyperthreading. Maybe that's confusing the installer somehow, although Win95 compatibility mode should fix that.

Nope, you can make it fullscreen with DosBox.

I seriously doubt it's the monitor, it'll be differences in hardware or software of the two computers. If you want to prove it hook the CRT up to the newer box for 5 minutes and try the games that wouldn't work with the LCD - they won't work with the CRT either or i'll eat my hat.

Try DosBox, it's great, and there's hundreds of great abandonware and freeware DOS games out there.

/edit: Unless... your LCD is actually incapable of running as low as 640*480... I doubt it though. I stand by my hat-eating statement. 🙂

Alrighty...

Well, if it isn't one thing, it's another. This computer doesn't have a floppy drive, so I just copied the disk contents to folders. I tried installing inside DOSBOX from the folder with Disk 1 and it says SC2000 must be installed from Disk drive A or B

now what? This is like pulling teeth. Any suggestions?

oh, BTW, the minimum resolution I can set this 19-inch LCD is 600x800, I hope that isn't a problem too.

Can you try plugging your CRT into your Dell? This will at least tell you if it's just the LCD going blank.

For the floppy part, check the README. You can mount a folder as a floppy drive. Then just mount another directory as C: and install there. I'm not sure how to handle multiple floppies...

Ok,

I tried using a flashdrive as e: to get around this. I put the contents of the floppies on the stick drive, mounted it as a: Then during install, it gave me an error message

Looks like this is going to be difficult to work around. Don't know why it works fine on a computer with Win XP SP2, on an Nforce 2 chipset motherboard and Athlon XP 2500+ Barton CPU etc. and a GF 6600GT video card. But it does. Rig 2 works, Rig 1 doesn't.

You might want to make images of those floppy disks to mount as a: rather than copying the contents. Then you can put the images on a USB stick and move them.

BTW - which machine are you trying to mount the floppies on? I thought you had already tried an install on both boxes.

I'm not sure what difference this would make, images vs contents of the floppy disks.

The machine I successfuly installed SC2000 on is the R2 in my sig, and it does have a floppy disk. I installed it from the floppies. The other R1 (Dell) machine has no floppy.
