Ive recently come into possession of a silver plated butler's tray from the late 1930s. Ive detarnished it, then applied silver polish. It took about two hours, and could have easily taken several more. The designs are very intricate. Prior to this piece, Ive never owned any silverware.

I found this same piece online for sale for about $550 (same make and model stamped on back). A 92.5 percent sterling tray would run about $2500+ in metal content alone (7.5 lbs of silver). Its roughly 21 x 16 and heavier than it looks.

I didnt pay anything for it and had thought about selling it for around $80, but it looks so nice all polished up now, I might just keep it. :)

Do you own any pieces?

Don't own any silver.

My mom has a set of silver that came from her grandmother. In addition to the usual items of cutlery, it comes with silver sporks. I kind of want it just for that.

Up until getting this tray, Ive never been interested in silverware. I went to a gold and silver exchange to get some history and became somewhat fascinated by it. Considering the chemicals I used to clean this piece, I would want to make sure the cups and flatware people serve with are thoroughly cleaned before using them.

We inherited silver from both sets of parents.

PITA to maintain.

We sold off lots of the bigger pieces that we'd never use.

Most of it was "real" silver, not plated.

As you know, the price of silver has skyrocketed over the last five years. Todays quote is $18.57 per ounce (dealer may offer less to cover overhead). When was the last time you had it appraised?
