Silverstone FN121 comes on ... sometimes.

Strangest thing I've seen in a while:

Just picked up a Silverstone FN121 case fan. Plugged in the variable speed controller to the faceplate and the three-pin chassis fan connector on the motherboard (an Asus P5N-SLI).

The comes on like one out of every five times I turn on the system. I have no idea what's different about that one time -- and when it does come on, the speed controller works fine, everything works fine. The rest of the time...it just sits there.

What gives? Is it just a ban fan?

. Exactly how do you have this wired - your OP is none too clear on that? You want to have the 4 pin power connector on the fan connected to a drive power connector, not one of the special FAN connectors that many PSUs have these days. As those FAN connectors are thermally controlled per the temp in the PSU. So you won't be getting full voltage very much of the time.

Nope, no special connector, just a regular drive connector. Had one wire going to the chassis fan connector on the motherboard and a molex power connector to the PSU.

I think the fan is just hosed - it worked a couple times but I smelt something burn, and it wasn't on my motherboard. I think the bearings were shot.
