Silly Wireless Question

Why do access points and routers have ports for networking cables on them? Isn't it handled wirelessly, thru the antenna?
Is it so I can go wireless but also use wired if needed?
Thanks

Wireless routers also offer wired connections.

Wireless Router/Switch: Serves as a Wireless Access Point and also a wired network switch, typically up to four ports.
Wireless Access Point: Only serves as a Wireless Access Point and interfaces to wired network/modem through network jack. No wired connections.

In a way WAPs (Wireless Access Points) are more secure because you can put them outside your firewall (which is where all Wi-Fi should be). With a router your wireless is directly interfaced with your physical network, creating a possible security hazard.
