Its fairly old but always starts so I'm not looking to replace it. I want to treat some rust spots, I can easily sand off the rust. What sort of paint should I use?
I'm thinking a car touch up paint its obviously made to go on metal or should I do a rustoleum(sp?) type paint?
I need to treat several moderate sized spots not paint the whole machine.

Yes, pretty much rustoleum and then some matching automotive paint. Make sure to prep the metal before or it will rust right through again. Depending on the surface, a wire brush until you get to bare metal should suffice.

after you sand/brush the rust off then paint ...a couple coats of this will also further help:
