But how do you remove the fan that covers the processor? I'm trying to get to the processor but there's a big fan covering it -- I don't want to just yank on it, for fear of breaking it. Any special tricks? It seems to not want to just pop off easily.

It depends on what kind of socket it's based off of. Each socket's heatsink has a different way of removal.

there should be retention brackets holding the heatsink to the motherboard, release them and it should come off fairly easily - dont yank it indeed.
