Silly question: Would a Voodoo 2 speed up my 3D slightly?

Since the Voodoo 2 was a pass thru card, can it speed up my 3D games slightly? Like if my 9800 Pro did like 95% of the work, and maybe the V2 took like 5% of the burden for Direct 3D. I mean its a pass thru card so it couldn't hurt to have it on? would it?

nope. the pass through was for when the voodoo 2 was a 3d only card and you had another card to handle 2d. when your 9800 outputs an image, nothing more can be done to it by anothe card..

what vivan said....

as soon as you put thos voodoo2s in place and apply the drivers and run the cables, your 9800 pro will turn into a 2D video card and the voodoo2s would do ALL of the 3d work.

This is not true.... back in 97-99 or so, I had Nvidia's Riva128 and TNT1/2 cards paired with Voodoo1 then 2 later on... I set it up to do Direct3D on the Nvidia cards, while Glide on the voodoos of course. Where did you get "the Voodoo2s would do ALL of the 3d work" ???

ELopes, That's the way I set mine up back in the day. I still have two VoodooIIs, but I have been reluctant to install them. I think the IQ would suffer on the pass-through, but I haven't tried. Also running DVI, not VGA. Thought about it though for the couple of 3DFX glide games in the closet.

forgot about the glide rigs like that, you can select an adapter, but that is what the voodoo2 was designed to do, take over the 3dwork from the card it was attached to.

anyway, primiumG, DONT DO IT

It was designed to be a "3D Accelerator" - an addon card. Both D3D and OGL allow you to select which hardware to use.

But yeah, no point unless you play lots of old-school GLide games and suck at Google bad enough to not have a GLide Wrapper. :D
