Silly problem with Word

I don't know what I did to it, but now MS Word is showing funny symbols with I pull up a blank page and when I create a new paragraph and hit the space bar.

I know this has something to do with Showing the code, or something like that. Does anyone know how to turn that off?

This is MS Word 2000. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may be talking about show/hide. If that's the case, there is a toolbar button that looks like a backwards P. Click it.
