Hi

Anyone ever seen this?

OS:Windows XP SP2/Server 2003 SP1
Machine: various models

I installed this combo SATA/ USB 2.0 card by Silicon Image in order to attach a USB Iomega REV device in a machine that only has onboard USB 1.1.

I had originally installed the Iomega REV system software that allows the device to be written to like a tape device or external hard drive (initially the REV device is seen as a CD-ROM device). I was able to write to the REV when it was conected to the onboard USB 1.1 and installed the USB 2.0 card to get additional speed. I have not been able to write to the REV on that system since. I have reinstalled the REV system software but no juice. I removed the USB 2.0 card but still can't write to the REV when connected to the USB 1.1. No combinations of uninstalls and reinstalls work.

I even tried another USB 2.0 card by VIA and it doesn't work. However when I installed the USB 2.0 by VIA in another machine with the SAME OS and installed the SAME REV and SAME system software it works fine - so the REV is good.

I went into Device Manager and removed all instances of the Silicon Image card, including from "Hidden Devices" in both SATA and USB sections in addition to physically removing the card from the affected system. Nothing works.

On the system that works when I check the associated drivers with the CD-ROM or REV device I see these: cdrom.sys; imapi.sys; redbook.sys; storprop.dll and imdrvfsf.sys in driver details. All are supplied by MS except imdrvfsf.sys which is supplied by Iomega. On the system that does not work the imdrvfsf.sys is missing and instead I see driver file called SiRemFil.sys which is suplied by silicon Image. I tried renaming it and the system blue screens. All efforts to remove this file fails. What I can't figure is why it is still there after I remove the card and uninstall it's drivers. I am pretty certain that if I can remove this from the drive details and replace it with the Iomega file they system will work.

I have installed this card in 3 machines and all three show the identical problem. Installing another USB card in the affected systems do not remedy the situation. i am at my wits end.

Any ideas?

Anyways no matter how I try I cannot get the

I haven't got any clear ideas about how to fix this, it's something that it seems like I'd have to be sitting in front of it in order to futz around with it myself until I accidentally fixed it. :)

One suggestion might be this: after you uninstall the device, and make sure all the software in Add/Remove Programs related to it has been removed, and make sure that the Services MMC doesn't show any services related to it, remove the hardware, go into the Registry and search for any instances of that file name, and remove them (make sure to make a backup of the entire Registry before you delete anything, and I like to make backups of each Key where I'm deleting anything; usual disclaimer, don't blame me if you F up the entire machine). Also check the system.ini and win.ini files, just in case (I assume that Win2k3 has the msconfig tool, which makes it easy to look at those files). After you reboot then, you should be able to rename the driver file (don't delete it just in case you do need it at some point). Then reinstall the hardware as well as all the software and drivers.

thanks for your reply -

I already did everything that you suggested: ran the msconfig tool, backed up and removed every instance of it in the registry, etc and it still does not work. It seems like this thing intergated itself into my OS. I am thinking that I may have to do a repair.
