Silent PIII cooling

Megatomic

I did a search first before posting this... 🙂

I am trying to provide cooling for my dual PIII 1GHz chips that is the quietest possible. I would like to eventually get to an almost silent system as it sits VERY close to my head. What would be my best course of action here? I have the stock Intel HSFs on right now and in a few days I have some new ones from Taisol coming in. But what I'd really like to do is, if possible, install passive heatsinks that would be sufficient for the task.

Here is my basic setup:
ECS D6VAA
Dual PIII 1GHz chips
Antec SX830 case with 1 intake fan and 1 exhaust fan

Is there a passive heatsink that I could use and get satisfactory cooling? Thanks in advance. 🙂

Start by moving the intake fan to exhaust in the open mount at the rear. This will actually improve cooling and reduce apparent noise. put some kind of sound absorbing material a few inches behind the box- cork or acoustic tiles, macrame, blanket, anything. You may be able to run the twin exhausts in series (6v each) or at 7v while maintaining satisfactory case temps.

The 760092 Taisols are very effective and can be used with very quiet fans, the stock fans are somewhat noisy. They're among the few that will actually perform decently with fanadapters and 80mm fans (set to exhaust away from the sink.)

Modern high speed processors just put out too much heat for pure passive cooling. Near passive is possible, with very large sinks and quiet low flow fans. Experimenting won't hurt the Intel processors, if they get too hot, they'll just shut down. Overvolting can kill 'em, though.....

Just one old guy's POV.....

Thanks for the tips Jhhnn. I will definitely try out moving the intake to the second exhaust position and see how that does. Even if the actual dB level is the same, the sound will be exitting the rear of the case (away from me) rather than in the front (right at my ear). That's got to help some. I have considered just removing the fan but then I always back off of that idea as I like to maintain cool temperatures in the case to prolong component life. This seems like a decent compromise to me. 🙂

Well rather than relocating the intake fan to the other exhaust location I just removed it. Noise levels dropped noticeably and case temps stayed pretty much the same. Yay me. 🙂

I got one of my Taisol CEK733091's in today. The other is on the way. Hopefully they aren't gonna be too noisy. The fans are 10mm high not 25 like most other hsf's I have had before. I have no idea what to expect from them.

Well as for PIII cooling I am using a pair of Alpha PEP66 with some sunon fans. I once did some work on the inside of the case and forgot to connect the HS fans and I didn't even know there were unpugged for almost 2 days till I got a CPU tem warning on a reboot. The PEP 66 is a great HS so you can just use some quiet 60mm fan and that should be as quiet as you can get it
