Silent or Near Silent Computer

The quest for a silent/quiet PC can be a long and frustrating experience, but it's worth while and you don't have to sacrifice performance. You're doing the right thing by considering quiet components before you build. It's much easier to start with quiet components rather than trying to silence noisy parts later.

Take a look at the Seasonic power supplies. They make some high power quiet ones.

Also consider a case with large (250mm or larger) fans that move lots of air at slow rpm. Hook them up to a fan controller and slow them down even more to 200 or 300 rpm. These are my favorite and they're cheap:

I modded my Antec Sonata with a clear acrylic side panel and a 250mm cutout for one of these blowing directly on my MB and components:

I never have cooling problems even in mid summer and I'm able to turn the rest of my 120mm fans all the way down. The best place to research this stuff is http://www.silentpcreview.com/

I agree with the huge fan thing entirely which is why I like the antec 900. A shame I haven't seen many cases with large fans like it since I'm not really into case modding.
I've tried drilling a hole into a steel chassis case before and it didn't end well.
