Currently using an ASUS Eeebook X205TA running 64-bit Debian.

Pro
1) Silent - there's no fan at all
2) Small, light, and awesome battery life
3) cheap, only $200

Cons
1) locks-up occasionally for no rhyme or reason
2) no audio drivers for non-Windows
3) only 2 GiB of RAM

Performance of the Atom chip isn't too concerning for me. The main issues for me are what's listed in the "cons" section (mainly #1). Looking to replace this thing mainly due to con #1. Any recommendations? Mainly used for web browsing.

The 12-inch MacBook is fanless, so that's an option. I'd look into a refurb 2016 model if you can, though, as it's pretty expensive to buy new.

i7 is not necessarily (or even at all) noisy by itself. It all depends on the thermal solution the manufacturer designs. Som eare better at it, some are not.
before, we did not use to care much for noise, so they did not bother much. Now, more and more people have this high on their list, so it has gotten more important.
