Silent Hunter V, worth $29?

I liked the last one, although I got a little fed up with some of the bugs. The immersion of 5 sounds intriguing, but the reviewers were pretty harsh on the interface and bugs. It's $29 on Steam, but the reviews were mixed enough that I'm wondering if this is one of those "wait for the $5 deal" games?

You are better off buying Silent Hunter III and putting the Grey Wolves community patch to it than dealing with that slighty eye candy improved (but everything else worse) DRM'ed constant server conection V.

I would stay far away until at least sub $10.

It's a shame that older games are usually better than newer ones. I've heard the same advice from others, to just stick with III.

I was kind of psyched that it included first-person movement around the interior of the sub... but it sounds like they really borked the execution.

If you do buy it just put it on a shelf and download the torrent thats been cracked, the DRM on that is not worth dealing with.

Let me state:

I'm a BIG fan of the SH series. Been with it since SH 2, and each SH game since III was a first day purchase for me. III was stellar, IV was buggy, but was excellent after being patched.

SH V was also a first day purchase. And it was horrendous.

I cannot begin with how bad this game was, except to say almost in every conceivable way, it was a major step back.
I could go on at length about the horrid technical performance, the visuals that were actually WORSE than SH IV, the MYRIAD bugs and glitches, the poorly implemented and intrusive DRM, and some of the worst, most god-awful AI (for enemy ships) I have ever seen.

But what actually made the game simply unplayable for me was, inexcusably, the actual design decisions they made. This is the epitome of a "dumbed-down" game, which goes completely counter to the series goal as a simulation. Everything just feels like they were trying to lure in console gamers who have no real interest in sub warfare or realism. Linear style, far less freedom, dumbed down options and features, terrible interface. It's just a total slap in the face to fans of the series and anyone looking for a competent sim.

It's made doubly sad by the fact that it's dismal performance probably ended the series as we know it, and it's sad this is the last game we have to remember the series by.

I haven't touched the game since a month or two after its release. I have no idea what the fan support is like and whether there are any mods to fix all the issues, but I somehow doubt it.

I would DEFINITELY recommend getting the SH IV pack (with expansion), as well as SH 3, and enjoying all the mods and content for this wonderful games.

Main benefit might be helping them make a Silent Hunter VI 🙂
The studio that makes the series basically stated about a month after SH5 came out they were never going to make a SH6 due to a number of factors. Heck they basically pulled the patch support plug on SH5 round the same time.

My thinking is that this, like a lot of other simulation games (and a few other genres), are going the way of the dodo due to them not being highly marketable to a wide audience. Niche games like this will eventually become independent studios only.

Yeah I have SHIV, pretty good game once patched I agree. There were some features of SHV that sounded awesome, but clearly sound is all there was to it.
