SILENT COMPUTER needed

i have a 200mhz web server running NT4, but I need it to be completely silent because my stepfather s**ts his pants over the fact that i leave the computer all day which is a waste of energy. i dont have a case so its all duct taped down in a cardboard box (which works fine, thank you). the only real source of noise is the PS fan. Its really low draw coz it idles most of the day, so would it be okay to open the PS (i know, unholy right?) and cut out the fan? the thing has no airflow anyways, its a box. no leds, no case speaker, just a loud PS fan. Please dont tell me to buy a new quiet PS, its not an option, im broke. heh, why do you think im running a 200mhz?

You registered just to ask this and you bothered to put something in your sig? 😛

You'll probably get better responses in the General Hardware forum, which is probably where this is going to be moved anyway.

I'd say if you think your stepfather is stupid enough to not realize the computer's still on if it's not making any noise, then go ahead and cut out the fan in the PS. Worst that'll happen is you'll need to buy a new PS.

oh im sorry, i cant be a new member? it just so happens that i registered a week or two ago but the reg app was being a nazi. and yes, i have a sig. so do you! what a coincidence.

oh yeah, how do i rewire it?

probe the wires that are going to the fan. You should (?) have 12v going in...you want to keep the ground and find a wire that puts out 5v instead of 12v. After you find the appropriate wire, just switch them or splice in (don't forget to mark the 12v wire if you decide to switch it into a 5v harness).

a case, not a cardboard box, would help alot.

Although i would like to run my comp with the case open so it can run cooler, but i just cant stand the noise, and closing the case helps reduce the noise significantly.

find old computers and jack the case for free.

Open power supply, unplug fan, close power supply, make sure your cardboard box is well ventilated, and you'll be fine. I ran a K6-2 333 system like that for over a year.

roughed up styrofoam block noise fairly well as well. PLEASE be careful futzing with your psu. There are dangerous amounts of electricity in there, even if it's unplugged. Also, I know that you CAN remove the psu from it's outer casing and run it like that and maybe passive cool it (there are mods that require this it seems), but it's kinda dangerous and does generate a small amount of interference.
