My parents finally feel it is time to step up from their old P3 Dell and told me to pick out a computer for them. Their budget is around $800 and I would like to make the computer as silent as possible with no flashy LEDs or huge cases. They do not do anything more than web surfing so I doubt that they will care if I was to get them a X2 or a plain AMD 64 but one thing I would like to get them is a nice monitor.
On a side note what happened to the 2005fpw monitors from Dell? I know they made a new model or whatever but did they stop production of them?
So basically I need help making a silent $800 budget comp. with a nice LCD monitor.
I have some spair parts that I can use:
NVidia 5600 graphics card and a 300W name brand psu:)

Just get a Dell 5150 or E510. They are silent and fast and can be had with 20" LCD for <$800. I don't know why you want to buy them a video card for web surfing, but you can add a pci-e card if you really want, but the on-board video is good. Plus you'll get a legal copy of XP and won't have to use any old parts, plus they get tech support and warranty so they won't bother you.

For silent operation, buy the following:

Scythe Ninja
Scythe S-Flex fan

Get enough fans to fill up the case you choose, and an extra 120mm for the Ninja.

Good advice, and if anything goes wrong with the build it's not your fault :)

Would they like a laptop instead? An E1505 has a 15" screen and core duo processor (= quiet but fast) for under $800.

Echo the laptop idea. I am a parent - :) We travel a lot and it is nice to take it along. And, there are no cables or wires to deal with - and it can be in any room in the house - and move.

Buy prebuilt. For $800 after whatever sales/rebates you could get a pc to fil ltheir webrowsing/word procesing needs and then some.

Firstly, all prebuilts i've ever encountered are virtually whisperlike. Very impressive.

Secondly, it dosent take time on your part to build one.

Thirdly, anything goes wrong, they have a number to call.

Forth, the system listed above does not have an operating system. You could get a far better system from a prebuilt company like Acer, HP, Dell or whatever for the price since they have huge sales and rebates on everything.

I just got a prebuilt for my parents. $289 after instant rebates.
Sempron 3200+
512mb ram
160gb hdd
CDRW/DVDrom drive
17" monitor

Yuo have 2.5x that amount. You can get a very good prebuild with maybe an extended warranty for that price.
