Silent, but deadly

Just get a zalman vf700 - it's not fanless, but the fan is really quiet, and it lets me oc my 9800p to 455/365 mhz.

Actually, it's not. Many reviewers on newegg said that they used it on a 9800xt. Plus, you can also get the silent fan to attach to it.

It works fine on my 9800Pro@XT speeds. However, it runs VERY hot unless you get the add-on fan (which is quieter than any of the fans in my system, so it's also basically silent).

I rigged the ZM80D to hold a 80mm panaflo L1A. @ 7V it is quiet (slight clicking) and cool. My 9800Pro 256 is overclocked to 420mhz core, 375mhz mem only during 3d apps.

Thanks for your replies... i do not think i have room for the additional fan - i am working in the confines of a shuttle... is there any other fanless solution? or perhaps a quiet fan solution that isnt large - i dont have room to expand into a pci slot the traiditional way - i have extra room BEHIND the card - comes in handy for heatsinks etc. but not for fans...

You could always sell the 9800xt for $140. You probably would have spent $20 on the cooling solution. Newegg has 6800 fanless by gigabyte for $265. So that'll be $100 to upgrade. The performance increase wont be significant. But if you are lucky to unlock the 4 pipelines, that'll be one sweet quiet card.

I would not run a fanless card in that case unless it was a Radeon 7000 or something. Plus you will loose the use of the PCI slot next to it, and from the looks of some pictures of the case, probably cannot even fit around the harddrive cage. It's going to be very risky in a SFF case, having all that heat just sitting at the side of the case not able to be dispersed anywhere. It's a $150 gamble and I don't think the odds are in your favor.

What of the ATI and VGA silencers... i can mod my case - is it worth it for those products? Namely, the ATI Silencer 3 - seems like thats the one designed for my card - is its silence and performance worth the mod?
