Silencing the Delta?

I recall seeing a short article a month or two back regarding "silencing" those damn dust buster 38cfm Deltas. Something about placing a dab of silicone at each of the mounting points between the fan and heatsink, using a spacer (in this case two #2 pencils) and connecting them. The pencils were removed once the silicone cured and the opening was wrapped in electrical tape.

Does this ring any bells? Even better, do you think it would have any particularly beneficial effect?

Thanks!

It shouldn't degrade cooling any, all it does is reduce vibration between fan and heatsink, and less distribiting the vibration to your motherboard and motherboard chassie. You probably most likely won't get much out of this, in most cases would sound the same, the delta is a loud fan.
In a blowing senario rising the heatsink like that sound reduce air turblance noise. The person who wrote that has his heatsink on his alpha blowing down, and its not even a delta fan.
With an alpha you should have you fan sucking from the heatsink, its optimal for its heatsink design, but may have to be flipped to flow with your case flow.

Fan clips and Delta screamers. Not an issue.
That is if you make a muffler for your fan.
I make mine out of plasticboard for the frame and a combo vibration damper/acoustical foam for the liner. I'm still trying to settle on 1/2" or 1/4" foam. I make the duct slightly undersized ao the Delta can be slid in about halfway and held securely. A guesstimate would be tha sound is halved in volume. Annoyance is decreased about 95% though, I haven't tried it with the case closed because it's 5" long and the case won't close. You know the fan is still there but the annoying whine is gone. It's like the bathroom door closing when someone's using a blow dryer, but better cause the highest pitches are trapped by the foam. And my temps improved, probably by the fan being off the heat sink by 2" but the airflow still being directed by the duct. My project will be complete when I curve or angle it enough to be able to close the case and not impede air flow. Velcro strips hanging from various case appurtenances hold it in place.
Anyone else trying something like this

clarkmo, do you have any pics of the setup? I have been thinking of something similar to it, but havent taken the time to try it out. Let us know what kind of temp results you get and noise levels. What kind of heatsink do you have?

Dampening the vibration will improve cooling. The same goes for spacing the fan a little further from the HS, this improves airflow.
