sil3114 OS install problem

Having major problems trying to get 2003 installed onto SATA drives on this older Asus A7V880 system.

Firstly the on board Via VT8237 SATA controller doesn't even detect the newer SATA 2 and above drives (unless they have a SATA I backwards compatibility jumper setting) so I can't use that.

I have a sil3114, and a sil3512a controller installed in PCI slots.

I have tried using RAID1 on the 3114 which got as far as finishing the install, but for some reason there is data corruption while using RAID1, with 2 different sets of drives (one set advanced format, the other set regular) . I'm not sure why that is happening.

Weirdly the controller works just fine when not in RAID mode with those drives (booting from IDE drive).

I tested this while being booted into the IDE OS, and copying rar'ed data (approx 4gb) to the RAID logical test, then run a winrar test which reported CRC errors. Source files were fine, and copying the same data over to the same drive and controllers but not using RAID, test would run without a problem.

So I think the next thing i did was try to use the other controller for RAID I, but for some reason it would find the drives, copy the files, but when you tried to boot from it for the first time it would report "ntoskernl.exe" missing or corrupt.

I think at some point in time I booted back into the IDE install, and did some corruption tests and found some corruption issues on that controller as well.

So fine I decided to just install it with out a RAID I and just use single drive.

Well for some reason I can't get the system to boot on sata on either controller after doing the initial blue screen setup, it just keeps reporting "Ntoskernl.exe" missing or corrupt.

I'm getting really tired dicking around with this. I hate messing with loading controller drivers onto a floppy drive etc, then having to load them during setup...then having to change the drivers when I change what controller I want to try.

I even made a slip streamed cd with the drivers but it isn't doing any good as I still can't get past ntoskernl.exe missing problem.

I had zero issues (other than rounding up floppy disk/drive crap) getting 2003 installed on 2 Poweredge T105s with RAID 1 via SAS 5ir and regular SATA drives up and running...so I don't know what the hell could be wrong with this system, other than Silicon Image sucks.

I had questioned the stability of the system and found a faulty memory module early on, and replaced it. I'm running prime95 at the moment (30 min so far) and it hasn't hiccuped.

If anyone can help shed some light on this situation, let me know.

hah, just a follow up on this. I have no idea about the corrupt data problems in RAID1.

As far as the Ntoskernl.exe missing or corrupt, I believe that had to do with the boot.ini pointing to the wrong drive since sata drives appear as 0 0 0 etc. to 2003. I guess you just have to make sure your sata boot drive is on the top most sata channel, top most controller, and the first HD in boot priority list or something.

I ended up moving everything to a different board, got the same error, then played around with said above and got it to finally boot. I guess 2003 is kinda dumb when it came to handling multiple sata drives.

I had found some similar info while googling.
