Signs of a dying PSU?

I was watching a movie on my PC, when my screen went black. About a second after the screen goes black, the rest of my computer shuts off. Whenever I try to start my computer back up, the fans and lights inside my case come on for about 1 to 1.5 seconds, and then shut right back down again. I tried different outlets and different cables. Does this mean that I need to buy another Power Supply? 🙁

It's an Antec 450W if it makes a difference, not buying Antec anymore :disgust:

Antec usually makes good power supplies. It sounds like a PSU problem, but it's possible it could be something else. Check your motherboard for blown/leaking capacitors.

90% of PSU problems on this board are about Antecs *shakes head* Plz don't say that's
because they sell more units brcause I'll have to start posting links and bumping threads.

Buy a Fortron if money is tight.

System specs and future upgrades if any play a part in your choice of wattage needed.

Look to spend about $80 for a really good PSU. Shop ewiz 😉

I've had a few dead psus that did exactly that, so it's very likely yours is fubar. And I've had one Antec psu come DOA, and one I just bought apparently died right before it was mailed. But then again I've owned 2 that were fine for the short period I had them, and I'm currently using a TruePower 380 2.0 that hasn't died on me yet, but the rails fluctuate just as much as any generic psu I've owned, so I'm not sure why Antecs are so highly regarded?

I heard that Enermax was also a good brand of PSU, so I'll look at Enermax, Fortron, and OCZ.

Thanks 😀

Indicating rig spec would be a help.

OCZ is just a gussied up Fortron. Fortron builds OCZ. Look at ewiz as I suggested for Fortron, Sparkle, Enermax, Enhance(VG PSU), as those are plentyfull over there and cheaper than Newegg.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
256mb GeForce 6800GT
160GB Hitachi HDD
40GB Maxtor HDD
Floppy drive
CD/DVD Combo
Chaintech Mobo
ATX Case

I think that covers it...

I don't really trust anything outside of newegg, but I'll look at it.

antec does make decent PSU's... or their OEM is decent however you say it. otherwise they wouldn't be in business for so many years. there are blown PSU's from every single MFG, not just antec.

forton's are usually cheaper though.

Enermax, OCZ are good

it's always a nice thing to upgrade a good power supply, it's a good investment

Antec sets the fan's rpm too low to achieve adequate cooling. This causes the internal components to heat up. Most high quality PSUs have very high efficiency rating...less heat produced and thus, lower fan rpm.

Thermaltake PSUs are crap, antec aren't bad but they are for the most part budget designs. Fortron is the best buy in the budget realm, but when it gets to the more interesting areas the competition opens up.

For the OP's rig the 400W fortron would be sufficent, as would most other 400W PSUs from good name makers, if you want low noise then seasonic s12 430W, if you want modular cabling then the enermax liberty 400W or antec Neo HE, there are others that are just as good, but those are the ones that sprung to mind.

For PSU's provantage.com is cheaper on antec than E-wiz (sounds like an Internet Urnal).

The problem again is not this brand or that brand. It is that antec, like most marketers of power supplies make several grades of power supply. Man, this point is easily, and I mean easily made in the power supply sticky and that's what I shake MY head over!

You gotta go by the specs for the actual model you are going to buy! My OCZ Powerstream 520 watt job puts out a full 30% more continuous power than the OCZ ModStream model. Asking brands is a poor question.

Have you been drinking again Googer?? Because you sure are posting like it. 😀

Zap EARNED Elite with a very low post count. Search his posts and read them when not under the influance. He posts with no fanboyism, knows his subject very well, offers all he can humbly, offers some of the best shopping/buying tips that I've recieved on this board and he reccomended I shop ewiz. A tip I accepted and do not regret.

The single time I bought an Antec, (a True330), it had to be RMA'd immediately. Got an Enermax 365 that's still rocking four years later. My main machine USED to have an Enermax 465, but that slowly bit it and then died a month ago...got this Fortron, which solved all my problems. Whereas it's not sexy, it's damn quiet and does the job well for a very reasonable price.

It's like compairing the Smart Power line to the True Power model line up. Smart Power has shared 5V and 12V lines. True Power uses three independant lines for 3.3v, 5v, and 12v.

He only has a hundred bucks to spend. No point in suggesting a turbo cool. An EPS True Power 550 or True Control 550 is a safe buy for $80-115 price range. I doubt you will find a better unit for that kind of cash.

What do you mean Zap EARNED Elite?
