Signature length suggestion

Vegitto

Diamond Member
Since some of us are always short on signature space, why not make it longer when the post count increases? For example, 255 characters with >100 posts, 355 characters with >250 posts etc. etc. How about that?

I like the signature length just the way it is.

I come here to read the enlightening posts....not hardware/personal/political/religion signatures. I hate having to scroll down several pages just to get past a signature on forums other than this one.

Take yours for example...you could easily gain plenty of space if you'd use the "My Systems" feature built into AT. Posting 5-6 lines of system specs is foolish and a waste of space.

If I really wanted to see your hardware, I'd click on a link to your system. 🙂

How about you clean up your signature so it isn't half a page long. 11 lines is ridiculous. Trim it newbie.

Remember this?

Damn straight I need more sig characters!

Why did I promise myself that I'd leave that in there until someone figured it out?

What I would like to see is a hybrid system where the signature length limitation is based partially on character count and partially on line count. In other words, either allow more than 255 characters, or do not count characters in URLs inside links against the total, but on the other hand enforce a total limit of perhaps 4 or 5 lines of text. This would let us use links more easily, while catching the people who like to abuse their sig for a gazillion lines of system rig spec-age. :frown:

Font color codes?
I assume the answer is the first letter of each color? 😵

Yep.
Long ass sigs with entire rigs in them and stuff are annoying.
I think mine is a bit on the long side, but compared to most it's fairly short.

Think of it as like your sig, only in hex and so *you* can't read it.

I apologize if my 3 lines of sig bother you. If you are reading this post at 1280x1024 on a 17" or larger LCD my sig only takes 3 lines because I wrap my specs (instead of using 1 line for each component). Still, if having my entire rig in my sig annoys you, I apologize for that. At the same time I think you will recover with no permanent damage to your psyche.

Personally, I find it a little annoying having to be "signed-in" in order to view a member's rigs. I want to be able to see the rig specs without having to sign-in or open another page. When someone posts an answer or a question on a PC hardware forum people usually like to know what kind of hardware that individual is running so they can compare systems and get a feel:

(1) If the poster has a system that is comparable enough in performance, specs, or configuration that whatever they are saying is actually relevant to the thread;

(2) How a member's rig might performance in comparision to their rig or someone elses;

(3) To see if the posting members has a clue as to WTF they are talking about. I see lots of posts where someone is running a Barton and a 9500 Series cards and they are talking about how well their rig compares to someone with a Venice or San Diego running a 6800GT, 6800 Ultra, X800 XT PE, ect. Obviously, this member may have multiple rigs, but by reading between the lines in a post its typically obvious that the member doesn't know sh1t from shinola.

Your sig is 5 lines, and I don't think Sunner necessarily meant yours. He meant the signs with 1 component per line, as you probably knew but took offence anyhow.

Yep, maybe I simply overestimated the average AT member's IQ when I assumed that people would understand that I mean sigs with

A64 74 GHz
1 TB of PC-8900 XDR
Badass mobo
Blah
Blah
Blah
And
So
On

Can't say I mind your sig, it's three lines on my 21", so no problem there.

n0cmonkey, I did not take offense. Why would you think that, just because I replied to Sunner's post? There is nothing in my post that should even remotely be inferred by a reader as to suggest that I am or was offended. My post was polite and professional in it's entirety.

And if you are able to comprehend was I said in the first paragraph of my post:

"I apologize if my 3 lines of sig bother you. If you are reading this post at 1280x1024 on a 17" or larger LCD my sig only takes 3 lines because I wrap my specs (instead of using 1 line for each component). Actually, I did know what what you meant. Anyone should pick it up through this paraphrase of your short paragraph "11 lines is ridiculous."

I just said what I said because some members' do find a full system spec sig annoying. I didn't think you did, but some do...

I don't find the stuff people write in their sigs annoying, I just find sigs that use up loads of real estate annoying.
If you manage to pack you rig, home audio gear, TV set, pictures of your family, and your favourite color into three or four sig lines, that's fine and dandy with me 🙂
