Signal loss issue

I have a PS3 connected to a receiver connected to a TV. Randomly my TV would go black and say no signal then after a moment would get the signal again. My first fix was replacing the hdmi cables, didn't fix it. Thinking maybe it was the receiver, I plugged the ps3 directly into the tv for 2 days. No signal loss so went and got a new receiver. Everything seemed fine the first day but it started going to snow randomly the next day. This has left me confused. Is it the TV? PS3? I read some people said they fixed the issue by going to component instead of hdmi, and my tv is getting old....

def sounds like a HDMI handshake issue, but no idea exactly what's causing it. my guess would be the AVR but you changed that out so???????

New development: Receiver shutoff and said check speaker wires. Guess I'll rewire it next.

yea could be a short but that's normally more noticeable as it sends the AVR into protection mode

What kind of receiver is it? I had an issue on my slightly older Onkyo (that turned out to be a common issue on that model - SR606 I think?), caused by failing capacitors on the HDMI board. It wold do the same thing where either the picture and sound would cut out looking for signal, or just the audio would drop in and out.

I was able to replace the problem caps on the board with some higher spec'd ones and all has been good since.

If there is a short in your speaker cabling, that would absolutely cut the sound out and put the amp into protection mode, but I wouldn't expect the picture to cut out. I guess it depends on how much shuts off on that particular model when it goes into protection mode.

The first thing I'd check there is that there are no stray strands of wire poking into an adjacent output terminal, either at the receiver or the speaker end of the cable. If the problem is easy to reproduce, you can disconnect all of the speakers and see if it happens, then plug them in one by one and see if it happens.

Turned out to be the PS3. I swapped it out and no problems.

I have an original 60GB PS3 and the HDMi port was the first thing to fail on it. It is now sitting like a brick on the kitchen floor for n-1 years of its life. POS.
