Signal Integrity with new router

My Linksys BEFW11S4 recently died and I purchased a new Linksys WRT54GS router. With the old router I was recieving about an 85-90% signal strength. I have not moved my PC, but with this new router (and matching pci card) I am averaging a %50 signal and the speed fluctuates from 11Mbps to 24Mbps. Is there any reason as to why this is happening and what can I do to fix it...or do I have to buy another type of antenna?
