Signal dropping/low speeds.

My system set up is in my sig.. click on MAIN SQUEEZE.

for ages i have a dropped signal from this system. Usually is drops and is renewed within a few seconds and all is well...for the longest time, it would drop, NOT renew and I had to reboot. After weeks and weeks arguing with the cable company... i got a new wireless modem and NIC card, so there would be no confusion on where it was coming from.

Now.. I have a laptop that has NO problems at all.. no matter where in the house I am, or even in the back yard.. strong signal, fast speeds... but on this desktop...

slow speeds.. i mean slower than 56k dial up.. and imtermittent signal drops. The signal comes right back, but it is still a pita.. as are the SLOW speeds. the NIC/modem utility shows either very good or excellent signal.

anyone got any suggestions... like is there a software setting i need to look at? or any ideas would be appreciated.

thanks in advance!
🙂

Tried updating the firmware for your modem/router?

Absolutely! Along with a lot of other things.. but it seems that the cable company says that as long as they are getting a signal into the house... they are off te hook. And both modem companies... Linksys and Motorola... say that as long as the laptop is working A-OK then it is a software problem, so they are off the hook.

It is freaking me out!!

Since the laptop works everywhere, including outside, I would suspect something wrong with the Motorola wireless PCI card in your desktop computer.

The first thing I would try is to move the desktop somewhere else (even just a foot or two might make all of the difference you need if it is currently pushed up against a wall, metal file cabinet, or other solid object that interferes with wireless signals).

Also, do you have a cordless phone near the desktop PC? Particularly a 2.4 Ghz cordless? if so, unplug it completely form its power source and see what happens.

Try completely uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless adapter in your desktop (make sure you have the drivers available on the PC before you uninstall). Download the newest version of the drivers from here. (Direct link to the download file here.)

Signal strength does not mean speed/connectivty strength. If your laptop is working it's not a router/ISP issue, it is a card/box issue with the desktop. Try changing security, go to open authentication, no WEP and see if that makes difference. Move the box into the same room as the router, and see how it works.

Holy Hyperspeed, batman!!!

Hahaha!!! Ok here is what I have done:

I guess I should explain my desk arrangment. The room is very small... in the corner is an outlet. From that outlet I have TWO Surge Protectors... out of which come ALL my puter stuff. If you look at my main squeeze.. you will see all the stuff I have connected to the system. Quite a Lot. Also the modem/router is downstairs in the dining room.

office set up

So, I moved the system three feet towards the door and I also updated the NIC and Utility software. I went from 56k type speeds and dropped signals... to 3MB speeds and so far no dropped signals. <>crossed fingers</>

I should have thought of all this... but to be honest...I have had this set up for approx. 3years and only started having problems over the last few months.

So... thanks a lot guys. I REALLY appreciate it.

Also, make sure you don't have a rack full of 1200 CDs in the way of wireless transmission, lol. I had crappy signal for a while on one PC, only to find that the only thing in its path was my CD collection. I moved them to the other wall across, and BAM excellent signal strength.

I have a cordles phone... every time i use the damn thing... i lose internet thru the whole house. I have to hit the signal button on the phone at least three or four times before I can use the internet and the phone at the same time... it is a pita... but i have been too lazy to get a new phone.

🙂

but i gotta say... moving the computer only 3 feet has made a world of difference.... so far... if it stays like this... i will be a happy girl.

I have the same problem with a 2.5Ghz phone and the wireless Netgear card in my laptop. Every time the phone is turned on, the signal drops. As others have mentioned, 2.4Ghz phones can interfere with the wireless signal.....but upgrading to the 5Ghz phones or downgrading to the 900Mhz ones seem to help.
