Is it possible? What do you use to do it? I've googled it, but the search terms come up with too many unrelated results.

check power levels. Don't use wireless zero config if there is a utility from the maker. Turn around....I have found onboard wireless to sometimes be sensative to what direction the laptop is facing.

I'm looking for something like the big goofy antennas and things that look like satellite dishes... something with big boosting power.

kinda depends on your abilities. The built in card is most likeily mini PCI, and under a cover on the bottom. From that card, there are wires that go to the antenna (usually in the screen). You could buy connectors like those and go to external anteannas. It's going to be a bit of a pain, and you will have to heavily modify the laptop. I would say get an PCMCIA card and/or USB card that allows and external antenna.
