Exactly why I want it. It's heavy as hell but if it's as sharp as the 18-35/1.8, then the 50-100 is a winner.

Effective 28-52mm and 75-150mm @ f/1.8 is 85% of the shots you'll take unless you need ultra-wide or a telephoto.... Now if Tamron could come out with something similar with VC . . . ():)

I never understood why no other company ever decided to make a lens like this. Back when we didn't have full frame cameras, I always thought that an F1.8 zoom would make perfect sense. It would give similar performance to a full frame F2.8 zoom...

Looks like this will be a great addition to the D500.

man...crop only
need something like this for full frame. Although i guess the lens would have to be quite a bit larger for FF

yes it would be interesting HOW big

the 24-70 F2.8 is actually lighter then this thing and its not small

it should work on FF in some capacity anyway. most DX lenses do anyway

Covering the 50-100mm focal range and doing f1.8, there might be trade offs somewhere. I wonder if there is serious vignetting and/or softness until stopped down to f/8. Always looking at new tech though there are always trade offs, there is no "magical photography stuff". Personally I like primes for sharpness from centre to corners when stopped down to roughly f/8. Still it will be interesting to see how this new lens performs. Technology is always moving forward.

not without vignetting like crazy though. On Nikons it shouldnt be a problem though. IIRC most Nikon bodies detect crop lenses and adjust crop accordingly. Canons (at least my 6D) doesn't do that.

The corner vignetting is maybe a large reason it's marketed for crop sensor...?

It's a hot new lens I doubt you'll have to wait long for an answer on any of that!

Not marketed, "made for" crop sensors. A full-frame (FF) camera has a physically larger sensor than APS-C. This means to keep the aperture ratio of 1.8 on this lens and have it cover a FF sensor, it simply has to be bigger. You wouldn't think it would amount to much, but it does. You already see how big this lens is for a crop sensor, if they were to try to design it to bring in more light to cover a FF sensor, the thing would be prohibitively large and difficult to make.

You have to remember that the aperture numbers are ratios, completely dependent on the focal length. That's why a 50mm/1.8 lens is compact and weighs a few ounces while this zoom lens that maxes at 100mm/1.8 is large and weighs over 3 lbs. The longer focal length you get, the more expensive (in cost and weight) a large aperture is.
