So after my earlier post asking for thoughts about which lenses to rent for my upcoming trip, I did a little more looking around, and decided to try the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro.

It just arrived yesterday, and I did a little quick testing with the macro setting.

All scaled down from the original 6MP images, but the sharpness is there at full size.
My cell phone
A small figure from Z Gundam
The Z Gundam figure at 70mm no macro
50mm f/1.8 Nikkor

And one of the other lens that I decided to just bite the bullet and pick up...
10-20mm Sigma EX

All of these are taken on a tripod in nothing more than normal room lighting, so there's a lot of room for improvement in that regard, but I'm pretty happy with the purchase at this point! It's not the fastest or quietest (f/4-5/6, no ultrasonic motor), but it seems for macro work it'll work pretty well, and for normal telephoto, I got it to use for outdoor sports, so I think that should be ok too.

I had that lens when I shot film. It was fun! That 1:2 setting was something else.
I'll bet you will like the 10-20 a whole better though.

Yeah the 10-20 is really wide. I've done a little test shooting with it, but not really anything worth posting.

Definitely looking forward to using that at the Grand Canyon next week.

A great lens for the price. I got when when I had my rebel 35mm and the reason I ended staying with canon when I went digital. Other than the slow autofocus the lens takes some great shots.
