how does it compare to the sigma 12-24 and tokina 12-24, its a good 150 cheaper than the other two. Considering a UWA for my K10d

I don't have it myself, but it seems that some people really like the Sigma 10-20 and others really dislike it:

The only negative review posted about the Sigma 12-28 lens on the same site is regarding some softness when used with a cropped body camera:

One person reported trouble with the autofocus on the Tokina lens in low light situations. Everyone else seems to like it a lot:

I have it. I've broken it... twice. It's currently broken to some degree. When it WASN'T broken it was pretty good though.

Are you actually thinking of the 12-24mm?

I love mine, but there are a few quirks you have to deal with.

First, you need an extravagant amount of light for the lens to take a good photo. Second, the barrel distortion at 10mm is pretty obvious (PTLens goes a long way towards fixing this issue, but it's not perfect).

I haven't done the most complete job of tagging my photos on Flickr, but here are the ones I have taken with the Sigma 10-20mm so far. Enjoy.

How have you broken it?

These guys seem to like it and suggest the quality control problems may be a thing of the past.

First time I broke it I dropped my camera onto concrete getting out of a taxi. Second time I broke it... I have no idea. It was during my winter break road trip, and one day it all of a sudden could only turn to 11-12mm, no 10mm. At the wide end the zoom ring feels really "spongy," not like the hard flush feeling that it used to have when it zoomed to 10mm. Another thing that I dislike is that with prolonged use the lens hood starts to attach VERY loosely to the body, to the point where it easily rotates and falls off almost by itself. The plastic "nubbies" on the body that lock the hood in place get worn down, and the only solution is to replace part of the plastic lens body with a new one.

I had one of these lenses. I just sold it last fall actually. It served its purpose really well and I had a lot of fun shooting with it. It's well built (like all EX Sigmas), and I had no issues with right-side softness like some people complain about. It was sharp throughout the aperture (and focal) range and focused quickly and silently.

Took thsi with it and a 350D

edit: I wound up trading it for a Tokina 10-17 fisheye lens, which I adore :D

i have it

its awesome.... end of story really. at 10mm on my 400d it gives an almost fisheye quality to the edges of the shot, you can get some very queer looking photos if you use the distortion to good effect. i shoot alot of break dancers and if you get the angle right you can make it look like people have overly long legs or arms, makes them look like theyre further away than they are... the sharpness isnt too brilliant at the edges though, but center sharpness gets no complaints from me (then again im no pro)

havent used it much at 20mm, but the distortion is pretty negligable at 20

only shame is the apertures, f/4 max at 10 and f/5.6 at 20mm, happily though because of the short focal length you can get away with shooting at 1/20th without camera shake, though you have no chance of freezing any action.

its well built, and the HSM motor is super quiet and very fast, for £300 ish it was worth every penny to me..... its not been off my camera since i bought it

the tokina 11-16 f/2.8 would help.

i kinda like the tokina lineup of fast crop frame lenses. 11 to 135 f/2.8. though i think i'd use the sigma 50-150 f/2.8 if that's what i was after.

I've got a 10-20 as well. I use it a lot and really enjoy pulling it out. From what I've found its a very sharp lens with good colors. I avoid shooting people with it because of the wide angle distortion but I've had a lot of fun with nature shots. It does take a lot of light but I've had a decent amount of success shooting at 1/20 hand held when its at 10mm. None of mine are tagged on flickr, thats a good idea, I think I'll work through my photos and tag them all.

both shots are very nice, but the composition of the boat shot is original and impressive. I like it (a lot).

I really like mine...though i've only had it for a week.

Here are the first pics i took with it (all but 4 of them were with the 10-20 at various lengths and apertures. (btw-i also shoot with a K10D)

none have had PTLens run on them: http://picasaweb.google.com/GrantMeThePower/BishopFeb08

EDIT-

I forgot to mention-as you can see this was a rock climbing trip. At one point i bashed the shit out of the lens (on accident). Was shooting a couple cave climbs and didn't realize how close i was to the rock and i turned and BAM.

I thought my new lens was dead...it was pretty nasty.

Anyway, NO problem whatsoever after that. I was super impressed.

GrantMeThePower,
Where did you buy the lens? Did you test it for right-side sharpness or anything like that?

I think this will be my next lens...

I actually ordered it off of amazon...at the time they had the best price for a new (not used) one.

I didn't do any testing for rightside sharpness with a resolution chart or anything, but i looked at a lot of the pictures to see if i saw any problems because i could return it to amazon if there was, but I have to say I've been very happy with it.

on the canon side:

for those who has cropped sensors, canon 10-22mm is a lot better than the sigma (better edge to edge sharpness and WAY less distortion). For us Nikons... if we want something in the 10mm focal length, we have no choice but the sigma, or we have to wait for the tamron 10-24mm... The bokeh of the 10-20mm sigma... sucks... And my edges are the sharpest <F/8.. Anything smaller than F/8 (i.e. f/22) my edges become even softer!
