I had been friends with this guy since I was in kindergarten. We had a great friendship up until 7th grade when he moved north, 60 miles out of town, just outside of Omaha to Elkhorn. Our relationship slowly dried up as he got into the "bad" crowd with drugs, alcohol, crime, etc. He recently cleaned up his act and was going to go to the military until a few months ago when he found out his mother was diagnosed with lung cancer, a smoker of probably 20 or so years. She passed away at the hospital last Tuesday, and I attended her funeral in Nebraska City on Friday. It was too sad. I shook his father's hand and my friend's, offered my condolences, and the funeral proceeded. It was way too sad for me. I felt terrible for my friend, as he has not had the best of days while he was in high school. I apologized to him for our friendship drifting apart and he said it was partially his fault. We forgave each other and we're going to go to lunch this coming weekend
But, I never felt so bad at a funeral as that one. I hate funerals... I didn't go to the burial, I couldn't take it. I couldn't stand seeing my friend like that.
Cliff notes:
1) Knew a guy since kindergarten.
2) He moved away in 7th grade.
3) Our friendship drifted.
4) He got involved with bad things.
4.5) His high school life blew chunks.
5) His mother passed away.
