I'm attempting to sell my old 88 Firebird and it hasn't been going too well. I am asking 1500obo for it, knowing that whoever wants to buy it, is going to want to drop the price.
Well some guy with a huge mullet came and looked at it a few minutes ago, and he had the money in his pocket, and he wants to take it to a mechanic tomorrow. So now I have to leave work early tomorrow, and get here, go with this guy to a mechanic, and have the mechanic tell me all the things about my car I didn't know. Wonderful. It's a 1988 Firebird for god sakes. I know he just wants to find out what is wrong with the car before he buys it, but it just doesn't make any sense. It's almost 20 years old.

UPDATE: Almost sold. Guy said he likes it and agreed to pay the $1500. Will he?

I check out cars myself. I don't need a mechanic.

And yes, more than likely he will be a buddy or something. If he doesn't want it, he doesn't want it. That's fine. I just don't want to waste my day tomorrow going with this guy just to have him tell me he isn't interested. But I guess that is part of selling a car.

Do you think this car is worth $1500?
This is how it looked when I bought it:

I'd say you'd be best off to pick a mechanic that neither of you know that way he won't weigh the odds in either direction.
PS- I'd have bought it if you'd been close to me 😛

The guy wants to drive my car to a mechanic buddy of his, across town. But he is not liable for damage to the car because it's not his. The car is no longer insured, but he has insurance. But does that cover damage to my car if he were to wreck it on the way?
I'm not comfortable with the idea, but I've been told it's common practice.

that car is gorgeous.

where do you live?

It's not really all that gorgeous. The paint has dulled down some. Some of those pictures were from right after I got it painted, so they are about 18 months old. I live in Texas, and it was a sunny day.
It definately looks better than the other firebird around here though.

Hey, if there's no primer spots or mis-matched body panels, it's probably better than 75% of all the older Firebirds out there 😛

You can probably get rid of the dullness with a good wax job and/or buffing with a mild polishing compound. There's no reason 18 month old paint should go bad unless it was a Earl Scheib job to begin with or something. Mine still looks pretty good I think and it's been ~3 years since it's been painted.

No, it's still shiny. Just not as shiny as it was. I waxed it a few times in the 2 years I have had it, but not lately. I am going to give it a wash when I get home. I think it's worth $1500, I just really want to get rid of it so I can pay off the car I have now. I just know this dude is gonna say, "I'll give you $1200." I need to get rid of it, but the least I will take is $1400. And even that is going to upset me. But there isn't too much I can do about it.
I paid $1100 for it when I got it. And I dropped alot into it.

Did you polish your wheels? Firebird owner to Firdbird owner, would you pay $1500 for my car, knowing what I posted above?

Easily worth $1500.

All the 305s I've seen will run till doomsday as long as you keep oil in it.

Once again. do NOT let his "Buddy" look at it! You need someone who's impartial and on YOUR side of town!

His buddy can kiss my white a$$...lol. If he won't give me at least $1400, he isn't getting the car, no matter what the guy says.

If by polish you mean remove the clearcoat and polish the aluminum? No, I just clean them really good and put a coat of wax on them. I'm probably going to remove the clearcoat at some point though because it's cracking and starting to look bad up close. Yeah, yours is easily worth $1500 with the new paint and mods.

Mine are the same way, except they are Trans Am wheels. But there is alot of dirt and gunk under the remaining clearcoat. I was going to get some stripper and take the clearcoat off, but I never found the time to do so. I thought about getting some Firehawk wheels, but they cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah, I'm going to try and maybe do it this summer. I like the Formula wheels, so I don't really want new ones, I just want them to look good again. I polished my plenum (I have a 350 TPI) last summer and it came out pretty good, so I'm hoping the wheels will too.
