One of our customer's computers went out. We've tried reimaging it with 3 different images. Dell has also come out and swapped everything but the case and the power supply. And still the machine blue screens whenever you try to load it up. So Dell decides to simply do a swap and send us a new machine to replace this one. The dead machine is a rather nice Precision 380.
The new machine is a sweet Precision 390. With:
X6800 Extreme Edition CPU
nVidia Quadro FX 3500
2GB of memory
2x 160GB Hard drives in RAID1 configuration
X-Fi sound card.

And what will this hoss of a machine be doing? Acting as a SQL and web server for an office with 3 workstations.

Even the now dead machine was a bit of overkill for this task. But to see a gem like this being sent for such a low end task...
:(

Thats what they want you to think.

The smart admin orders a machine JUST like this for his "SQL server", then promptly replaces it with a P3 windows box and uses said machine in his office with the doors closed.

Wow. Who is in charge of making the decision to get the beefy server?

You have no idea how much I'm tempted to. I'm probably going to pull the X-fi anyways so we don't have to redo the system images.

Aren't the Quadro FX cards pretty expensive? They're made for 3d modeling and stuff aren't they? Why would you need it in a database server? also a big  on the x-fi card.

should have added more ram than that other stuff.

They are expensive...but not all of them are powerful. They're just considered "workstation" class I believe, meaning they have better support. Last time I checked, most of them had a much cheaper, identically, regular equivilent.

IF you are going to run gis on it, then the quadro fx is justified. It's the only server software I know that requires a good video card.
