*sigh* Plasma image retention after only 2 years. [rant]

My 2 year old LG Plasma is showing some signs of image retention after watching anything longer than literally 1 minute.

For example, when using my PS3 and launching the YouTube app, it will burn in the YouTube logo after only a few seconds on screen.

I've babied the crap out of this TV - did a weeks worth of break-in (ran it for 8 days before I even watched anything on it) and used all energy saving features.

This sucks. I really prefer Plasma over LCD, but I think I'll never purchase another one again. I am about to throw this TV out after only 2 years, when my years (and years) old Westinghouse LCD is still going strong.

Anyone else ran into a similar situation? How long did your plasma live before it started showing IR signs?

most plasmas show temp IR from day 1, mine always has and IMO its a non issue because as soon as you start playing something its gone

Not all plasmas are created equally. When it comes to preventing IR, Samsung's/LG's are the worst, Panasonic's are better and Pioneer plasmas are fantastic. I never did a break-in (break-in slides by the way do nothing to prevent IR) and both my Pioneer's have never had a single hint of IR. And that's with 10+ hrs of SSFIV and Resident Evil 5 sessions.

What also helps is having your set calibrated. You don't have your TV set in ultra bright mode, do you?

Yeah, but my IR is sticking for minutes at a time now. I never really cared about it before since it would disappear when I watch a movie or something. Now, I can still see it when movies are playing. :(

Maybe I just got a bum set - at least it's November so I might be able to pick up a nice 3D set on Black Friday. Despite what I said about not buying another Plasma, I am sure I will.

i do agree with you Jack, Pio did something special in terms of the temp IR. my panny is calibrated has been since i did the break in, the only time it shows any real IR is when its white text on a black background (stupid PS3 updates) but its gone litterally 2 seconds after an image is shown. ive never seen it from letterboxed movies or games and ive done some very long gaming sessions with static images in certian places

the YT logo is only on the screen for what 10 seconds when you load the ap? it shouldent be creating that kind of IR that fast. something seems wrong. have you looked on AVS for any help?

Nope, I use the energy savings mode (dim screen) about 95% of the time. Whenever I am going into game or movie mode, I disable energy savings, and change the contrast/brightness the way I want.

I almost wonder if the IR is because I run the TV dim for most of it's life. It probably has thousands upon thousands of usage @ dim settings.

Yeah, I never noticed it from letterboxed (or 4:3) movies before either. Now I do. It's a recent change I've noticed for the first time this weekend. Can the sudden temperature drop have anything to do with it?

When I get home I plan to check their forum for some tips, but I've pretty much accepted the TV's fate. :)

My panny s series plasma has done that since day one. I run screen savers off of the sd card in shades of rgb, b&w, 10 seconds for each shade, and the image retention is gone in the first 10 seconds (bright white screen) if it is minor (standard viewing with non moving features like stock ticker or hud in games), 30 seconds if it is worse (left netflix on pause for an hour)

Not sure on mine. I guess it doesn't since I've never noticed. Had my Pioneer KRP-500m for probably 2 years.

I've had my Panasonic for 6 years with 0 issues.

Same as oldsmoboat. Never had a single issue with IR and my kids play their xbox/ps3/wii on it all the time. Between that and my sports....very surprised I've never seen IR on that display.

amdhunter - Does your Plasma have pixel shifting to help avoid this?

Yeah. I can notice the shift at moments, so I know it's working.

I really think the reason it's having so much retention (and I notice ghosts with bright scenes now that I am paying attention) is because I over used the energy savings so much.

The panel spent so much of it's life being dim, that when you brighten it up, it just can't handle it.

I think I am just going to live with it, and run it to the ground now. It sucks when you lose the feeling to take care of something like this. :(

(un)lucky goldstar there for ya.:)

Hahaha, I forget LG was once called Goldstar. I hated Goldstar products too.

Ah well, after some thought, you don't see the IR with movies and such, so I probably won't be using it for PC or gaming use. It still looks wonderful with movies. ^_^

No need to dump a good TV.

Run the scrolling white bar on the TV for a few hours, that may help.

Within the first 200 hours of owning my panny G25, I left it on, OVERNIGHT (8 hours or so) with my XBox turned on, left on the dashboard. Ran the scanning bar for 2 hours each day for 2-3 days and looked again one morning and found that all IR had gone away completely. Even if you have real burn in (as opposed to retention - ALL plasmas have retention) I think that LG plasmas cannot measure up to the old Pioneer units, and the new Panny units.
