Sigh, Nintendo still isn't doing the online thing for the next system

I lub my Cube, it has it's place. Sony and MSFT are kicking its ass in the online arena though. I have an Xbox but don't use it on Live, I just use my PC. But hell, at least give people something. No one that I know of uses Nintendo's online stuff now.

Still aren't looking at it for the next system either from what it seems like:

Link

Will it be network compatible and will Nintendo make Online games?

Nintendo PR: As long as the rate of broadband installation isn't up there with TV sets, then online play can't be the core of business development no matter what hardware manufacturer you are, regardless of whether it's included as a feature or not.

Yeah I know it's a dink site, but the guy has better news that most big sites.

Buy an xbox. When microsoft buys out the competition for $50 billion, they'll have all the games you love with xbox live support.

If MS buys out the competition what's to stop them from charging whatever they want for games and online services?

Does Nintendo make enough titles that warrant an online interface?
I could see the *possible* use of a so-called communications game like Animal Crossing and possible FF installments,
but aside from that most the titles seem like they are best left for the immediate user.
It's not like Gamecube or future Nintendo consoles are going to churn out first person-shooters or MMORPGs anytime soon.

Youre reading too deep into it. Theyre not saying theyre not going online, only that theyre not going to focus their entire business model around it.

Itll be online to a pretty signficant degree, Im sure, just not the focus of every game.

I'm assuming it will be like how the PS2 is right now.

Online gaming for consoles right now make absolutely no business sense. It makes the company LOSE money.

Well by competition I meant MS buying out everyone including Sony's games division.

There isn't a single game of mine that I feel like playing online. And that's over quite a few consoles. If I wanted to play games online I'd use a PC. It's the best platform suited for it.

Saying that Nintendo's making a mistake by not somehow figuring out how to make Super Mario Brothers Online or The Legend Of Zelda Online is a mistake. Assuming everyone CAN GET broadband is a mistake. I'd venture to say that no more than 10% of consoles that can be online have ever been online. Focusing your buisness around that small of an area is a mistake.

I think Nintendo will go multiplatform after this system and stop doing hardware. The bad thing about online is that the game makers some how think that they do not have to make a SP part of the game.

Microsoft and Sony are planning on building $500 next generation consoles, I hope Nintendo has the sense to make an affordable system.

Yes but your business model doesn't account for the future. It only accounts for now. I'd venture to guess that current 10% will jump up dramatically in a year, and at least be 35% when the next gen consoles come out. Look at it this way - the current batch weren't meant to be played online out of the box - the PS2 needs a broadband adapter, the XBox a Live! kit. (Or playable via XBC using nothing more than a CAT5 cable) The appeal of online gaming, something the Dreamcast barely scratched the surface of, will be an integral part of the next-gen consoles. It would be stupid not to have a business plan and/or to ignore it.

You're kidding, right? Realize this...while Nintendo may not be doing so well in the older market, they DO have a lock on the kid market, and thy also absolutely own the mobile market. They aren't going anywhere. You also realize that Gamecube 2 is already in the works, and currently slated to be released before the other two, right?

hahah....MS is huge, and I'm sure they theoretically COULD afford it, but why the hell would they do it? That would be the biggest waste of money, ever.

Yea that would be a big waste. There really isn't an exclusive game on the PS2 with the exception of Gran Turismo that is just all out bad ass. It was funny though - when Matsushita was working with 3DO on bringing out the M2, I was reading an article about how they could literally buy out both Nintendo and Sony if they really wanted to

Yea, they could afford it, but how could it be worth it? So they'd get a few more games that were exclusive...big deal...Nintendo is a big company, and I'm sure buying part of Sony isn't cheap either.
