He was acting a little quiet last night... I petted him on the head; but he just wasn't acting right. This morning, he was dead. :(

I'm doubley sad, because as insensitive as it sounds, now I've gotta dig a BIG hole. Just a couple weeks short of Thanksgiving. Oh well, I suppose I can have ham for thanksgiving... the pig goes to the butcher in a couple of hours.

I love the big turkey legs you can buy at fairs. Although, I herad that they werent really turkey. I heard that they were EMU (not emo) legs.

You were so proud of that turkey too.:(

Though granted I'm not a rancher, but shouldn't you be a bit concerned that whatever caused the turkey to die may be infectious for the rest of your animals?

Man that bites, I know how you like your huge turkeys. Thanksgiving dinner just seems like a little less satisfying without a big, delicious turkey in the middle of the table- maybe you can buy one off of a neighbor? Ah well, I love ham on Thanksgiving too- makes awesome leftover sandwiches as well!

why can't you eat him now? is it because he died of some unknown illness?

Any other symptoms? Hopefully nothing contagious.

I probably wouldn't eat a bird that just fell over dead, chances are you'd be fine but I'm paranoid when it comes to food.

He probably had something that made him sick... If it wasn't so close to Thanksgiving, I'd have put him on antibiotics 2 nights ago when he first started acting a little off... With all the damp weather we've had, he may have had pneumonia or something. But, yeah, it's a pain, because now I have to very carefully watch all the other animals. We already have a few baby bunnies that were sick, but they're on antibiotics and responding well to the treatment (except for the first one who became noticeably sick... that one died.

Oh well, when you've got livestock, you're going to occasionally have deadstock.

And, yes, this was the 50+ pound turkey. My wife and I were just arguing a few nights ago about eating him for thanksgiving vs. letting him just live out his life, since he was such a unique (to us) bird. Well, her plan won, but not the way we had envisioned.

T minus 3:27 for the pig.
She better not suddenly turn up dead... I'm *NOT* digging a hole that big.

Man I hope the ground isn't frozen up there. I had a cat die in the winter once. I already had a hole dug in the woods from when I was filling in some uneven spots in the yard, so I threw him in there, but I couldn't even make a dent in any dirt to put on top of him. I just put him in the hole and threw some rocks on top. That didn't stop other animals from getting to him unfortunately.
