My understanding is that it isn't a bug, per se, the 8MB thing is just what the controller does whenever it encounters an error that causes the firmware to panic lock. X25-M G1 and G2 had the 8MB issue as well if you Google it. Any number of firmware bugs can cause the drive to panic lock and enter this state.
If it's any consolation, I think the 8MB thing is pretty rare on these Intel drives. All you need to do is look at return rates for Intel drives to figure out they are very reliable and the number of users who do have problems are a tiny minority. But no drive is 100% reliable and firmware can never be 100% bug free.
I doubt a new drive will help much if you've already experienced the 8MB bug twice. To me that suggests there's some issue between the drive firmware and your system. Wouldn't be surprised if the replacement drive starts doing this on you as well. You might try getting in touch with Intel support and seeing if they can pass your problem on to engineering, maybe they'll be able to reproduce whatever is causing the drive to panic lock in your situation and incorporate a fix into a future firmware update.
i have the 600 gb version. I treat it with kid gloves.
I use it with a highend apc ups and a seasonic psu I fear it dying and regret the purchase. I now use smaller ssds like the mushkin 240gb enchanced chronos 240gb I have three of them total of 720gb and they cost 720 while the 600gb intel was 999.
Yeah odd about the video card, I can't imagine how but maybe the issue is somehow related to that.Hmmm, the first time it occurred, I was gaming and it just froze and I had to power down manually since it locked the system for over 5 minutes. The second time and third time I was getting BSOD's from the video card when I was installing drivers for an IOGEAR wireless USB to VGA device and it just suddenly rebooted and wouldn't boot into windows and giving the SMART failure warning. I dunno if that's related to the video card but that is interesting that it locks itself when it panics. Do you know if the data is recoverable after it's gone into this mode? (I scoured the intel forums and saw it wasn't but maybe I missed something)

As far as I know there's no way to recover data in the 8MB state, and the destructive flash is the only way to get the drive back to normal. Best bet IMO is to just keep doing what you have been and stay on top of backups.
