I haven't flown in well over a year and I'm flying out to Kansas from North Carolina to see my kids and a couple of friends for a few days.

Now I have to either pay $30 for this trip to check a bag, or go get travel shampoo, travel soap, travel toothpaste, travel hair gel (and I wont forget a ziplock for it all, bah! I hope my cologne its under 3oz), maybe a smaller travel toiletry bag so i can cram it all in my carry-on and a laptop bag

and im a pocket-knife guy. I always have a small pocket knife, swiss army knife or a leatherman micra. its just handy sometimes ...and I cant take any of that stuff on, at all.

Can I get away with one of those utili-keys if its on my keyring and i stash those in my bag?

This is all so ridiculous :|

I don't think they're going to let you take on a utili-key thing. If it's got a blade on it, forget about getting it past security.

checked bag fees need to go. if their costs are going up, fine, roll it into the ticket price

same with liquids. that was an overreaction, but now that the precedent is set, it will never be undone.

My family travels quite a bit around the US and Caribbean and I've found it's far easier to just check my bag, although I've yet to pay to check my bag... that may change things.

Boarding times are ridiculous now because of the fees, so I could see them going away.

ive done it before, but it was years ago and nobody gave my keyring a second look. hell...havent there been guys taking guns on planes and not getting caught? maybe if i take a gun they wont notice the utili-key...

maybe ill just snag a cheapo knife for a couple bucks at drug store after i land.

yeah thats the thing. $30 to check my bag ($15 each way) and take the stuff i already have, or buying travel size shit that only god knows when i will need again.

see thats what i was thinking, and i dont even need my keys on me so i can just stash them in my toiletry bag in a carry-on and probably be ok...i think.

Why not just purchase your toiletries at your destination, or use your family's? The travel sized toiletries are overpriced and selection is limited. Another option is to get 3 oz or less bottles and fill them with your favorite stuff. Hotel toiletries usually come in this size, so if are staying in a hotel you can grab some extra bottles. I don't like checking bags because of the chance they might be lost or ransacked.

I know some people use small tablet bottles for toiletries when travelling (the ones with screw on lids).

You can buy little travel bottles. My fiancee has a ton of them, and she just puts some of her normal sized crap into those. It's a lot cheaper than buying travel size items, although most are 99 cents at CVS. Just make sure it all fits in a quart size bag.

If you're staying in a hotel, F it. Use their shampoo/soap, and buy a little travel toothpaste and brush when you get there.

The $15 for a checked bag isn't horrible, but the wait at baggage claim is. I always try to carry on. Problem now is that the $15 fee means that people are bringing two bags onto the plane. You can have a "personal item" like a backpack plus a carry on bag, and the size of these things are getting ridiculous. Make sure you board early so that there's still room in the overheads to put your carry on, unless it can fit under your seat. Otherwise they'll check it on the jetway. It wont cost you the fee, but it's a pain to wait for.

i bought some little bottles, and yeah, i will have 2 bags. my laptop bag wont have much in it and will go under my seat easy, and the carry on i havent isnt terribly large.

i wouldnt mind the fee if i was going to be taking a lot of stuff, but ill only be gone 5 days so ill make due. im used to travelling *with* 2 kids, so this is going to be easier anyway.

well, i gotta pack and head to work, thanks and happy new years! :)

Just flew out of Kansas this morning. Never seen the place that crowded, it's usually pretty empty compared to Washington airports. I did even take my liquids of of my carry-on and they didn't say anything about it. They were however singling out a lot of older people for screening for some reason. I also saw one guy get his palms swabbed to check for some type of substances.
