sigh... how much to replace tranny?

so, my syncos on the 5th gear is completely wore out. So, what how much is it to replace the gear box? Do I need to change the entire tranmission, or i can just have the 5th gear 'fixed' ????

the car is 1996 toyota celica 1.8, FWD...

If you're handy, you can replace the synchro yourself. Look at the library for repair manuals.

Don't know about yours, but my minivan's auto tranny was rebuilt for a cool $1350 a couple of weeks ago.

i had one rebuilt on a 91 ford taurus for $850 a couple of years ago.
not going to be cheap, whatever it is.

You could have just the 5th gear syncro replaced, but It would generaly be better (but more expensive) to have the rest of the transmission overhauled while it is out of the car.

With the other problems that car has I don't think I would spend $1000+ on it. I might do a junkyard swap for ~$300 and hope for the best.

or better yet not use 5th gear while I saved up enough to get a different car.
