With our 2nd child due anyday now I've put off turning my Mustang in for a Minivan long enough. I like my Mustang but it serves no utilitarian purpose in a 4-person household that includes two young'uns. My wife will be getting the minivan and I will be getting her Nissan Pathfinder now.

<cry>

Any suggestions on bartering with used car dealers?

I sold my Mustang a few years ago. I still miss it but it was a pain to keep around. Got a lot of cash for it so that makes it easier.

Yea really, Mini-vans are NOT required for such a small family. You are an idiot if you think so.

The Pathfinder is enough for 4 but there is no room for two child car seats in the Mustang which won't work with our system of one of us picking the kids up and the other dropping the kids off.

We take alot of trips back and to Florida and Alabama so having a minivan is nice in that situation.

You might consider a midsize or large car instead, looking at gas mileage.
But as far as dealing with used car dealers, I would definitely read the article on edmunds.com first if you haven't already.

Trade up your man-card with a dad-card, and it'll be for the best!

Congrats on the new addition to your family! :)

you people wo are sayign a minivan is overkill most likely have never tried to lug a shild in and out of a sedan into a carseat. Its a pain in the @ss. haveing a vehicle that is higher up and has a wide door opening is a godsend.

Yes, I have. It really wasn't that big of a deal in my 2000 Prizm.

Not to mention the extra room to haul their friends around when they get to that age.

I'd almsot say look into a NEW minivan...with the rise of popularity of SVU's and cooler cars, people have lost interest in the minivan. Lately car dealers haven't been showing minivans in their ads for whatever reason either yet on the lot the salesguys are given incentives for moving them off the lot at ANY price. At my local dodge dealer for labor day weekend they will have a promo where salespeople will get quad points for every minivan they sell, and they will also be discounting 2005 models, so getting a minivan in the 8K-9K price range won't be too hard.
As for haggling, find a black guy, yeah i know it may sound racist, but white used car salespeople are assholes, black used car salesmen, well, they are awesome and they seem to be able to barter back and forth a lot more than their white counterparts. The last black guy i delt with got me 2K under KBB on a used car /w warrenty, thats friggin amazing at a dealer (this was at a ford dealership). A white guy, not a block away, on a very similar car with LESS options, wouldn't even break 500 under.

1989 Chrysler (Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager) - TURBO.

Should be cheap enough to keep the Mustang - I got mine for $700.

Heh, I was just about to post before you edited... it would probably cost about the same as two or three payments on a new van :p

Damn't quit beating me.

I own a 5.0l Mustang and a minivan the minivan being an 89 turbo carava that I got for $800. I am a single dude and still find the minivan handy as hell. I hardly ever have the rear seats in it but use it to haul crap all the time. I drive it more then the mustang and have taken to the dragstrip twice sofar to the mustangs 0 ;). Its not stock

When I was growing up my parents BOTH had mustangs and 60s models at that and we got around fine.

Get rid of the SUV, keep the Stang. Much better with gas mileage.

<sigh> Because we need two cars that can fit four comfortably especially with two child car seats. My Mustang can't. The only other car we have is a Pathfinder. We like the convienence of a Minivan even though we've never really seen ourselves in one until we learned our second child was on the way. It's a really good option for the frequent trips we make to Alabama and Florida to visit family and for when we've got our kid's friends too.

After we payoff the minivan we'll look into replacing the Pathfinder but I'm not paying for two cars at the same time.
