Was playing BF:BC2 last night and my computer suddenly shutdown completely. System would not startup at all (no fan's spinning or anything). Plugged in my old Fortron FSP400 laying around and system boots up fine.

Hopefully it was just that unit that was a fluke, I have another Corsair 400CX in an older system (knocks on wood, purchased two weeks ago) and wonder how long it will last. In the process of RMA'ing unit at the moment. Is there anything that I can do to prevent crap like this from happening? Unit is connected an APC UPS device that I recently purchased from the egg and room is well cooled.

Thanks

No.

Now, before you despair, know that you can minimize failures by buying good quality products and using them as intended. However, there is no consumer-level computer product that is immune to failure.

I've already seen someone have to RMA a Seasonic X-Series that died and Seasonic is about as top notch as you can buy. Most all PSU's are assembled in China with varying quality. Throw in some rough shipping and handling and your bound to get DOA's.

Yeah figures, I just need to be realistic as any manufacturer will have units that fail. Corsair does has great support anyways :). Ty all

Make sure the mobo is not shorting out to the case anywhere underneath the board, i have seen a screw stuck under a mobo shorting to the backplate fry PSU's after a few months of use. That said everyone has bad units no one is perfect.

I had a Cyberpower UPS jack my PC psu up once. PC kept shutting down every 10 minutes or so. I spent a day checking everything out and couldn't find the problem. As last resort I disconnected PC from UPS and everything went back to normal. I have hard time trusting those things now because they aren't as benign as they can seem.

This is what so many seem to forget. Frankly, I'm surprised there's not a greater failure rate. The manufacturers to what they can to minimize DOA's from shipping, etc., but as Zap said, nothing is immune to failure.

And I had an Antec Signature 850 die in less than 48 hours of use. Turned the computer off, turned it back on an hour later and nothing. Put the old Corsair 620HX back into it and it booted perfectly. Doesn't mean the Signatures from Antec are terrible or anything, just luck of the draw. C'est la vie.
