Ok.. this just started happening I'd say 1 month or so ago...

EVERYTHING crashes on this machine now, seemingly randomly. I.E Internet explorer will BSOD, or "illegal operation" a lot. Counterstrike will sometimes just "vanish" while playing it, and it NEVER can switch maps (it will always say "map does not match server) once in-game. Also seemingly random apps seem to crash.

hell, I yanked the SCSI drives and threw a brand new maxtor 40 gigger in last night, and tried to re-install windows and THE INSTALL FREAKING gave me "illegal operation". Didn't seem to harm much, as I'm in windows right now.. but still.

I did pull windows off my old hard drive, so it's not a "fresh" copy I guess if the drive is somehow corrupting things. But I doubt it.

I've re-installed windows, put in a new hard drive, tried different RAM.. I thought the CPU (PII300 sl2w8) might be overheating so I bought a golden orb and cracked the plastic case of the thing. That didn't help at all. RAM I highly doubt is the issue because it's the same RAM as before this stuff started happening, and is PC100 (system bus speed is 66mhtz).

setup:
Abit bx6r2
SB Live! Value
3com 3c905b NIC
Vooodoo3 3000
Drive C: Maxtor 40GB UDMA100 5400RPM IDE drive
Drive D: Western Digital 13GB drive
some generic 40X CDROM.

any ideas would be helpful. I can usually figure out whats wrong with these things but this is just stumping me. Strange that is just all of a sudden started happening, system used to be rock solid.

Sounds like it is time for your bi-annual Windows enema. Format and re-install.

When I build a new system and the first thing I did after verifying that all was running at peak efficiency was use Norton Ghost to make an image. That way in 6 months when Windows 98 is running like crap I can just nuke the whole mess (after backing up any documents and such that may have been added since then) and have it all fresh, clean and new...

did the format/re-install piece. :) didn't help.

Running windows 98. What's an easy way to get IRQ settings?
