Implicated as being a possible cause or contributory factor in 13 deaths (for 5-Hour Energy) and 5 additional deaths for Monster Energy. 5-Hour energy drink has also been implicated in dozens of people having problems like heart attacks, convulsions, and a spontaneously aborted pregnancy. Still on the market. (FDA)

Buckyballs have caused a few surgeries (zero deaths) because some kids were too stupid not to eat the things - banned. (Consumer Product Safety Commission)

*sigh*

And Jarts (lawn darts) caused only 3 deaths - each from negligent abuse of the product - before they were banned. (Consumer Product Safety Commission)

*sigh*

I really wish math could be used in crafting policy decisions - and the same math.

We should really encourage products that cause death. We are overpopulated.

lol it's really sad how they keep banning all these things. Normally there's a circumstance that makes it so it's not the product's fault. Usually it's a user error. In the case of energy drinks it's people drinking like 30 of them, or people with a certain medical condition etc. If you have heart issues chances are an a energy drink is not a good idea.

I've always wondered though, what would happen if you took a sleeping pill and a red bull?

Story on our local news the other day said over 1700 kids in the last two years have required medical treatment after swallowing buckyballs. No matter how many died, that's a lot of kids.

Drowning is the #2 ranked cause of death among children across the nation. We MUST ban dihydrogen monoxide to stop this senseless killing. Don't be fooled by the crazy pro-DHMO lobbyists, they are paid off by the chemical companies that package and sell DHMO.

You're implying that common sense plays a part in product evaluations.

What the hell, what kind of dumbass would drink 5 hour energy when they're pregnant? I'm apprehensive about energy drinks even though I'm a perfectly healthy person who does not have a delicate, developing human being inside me.

I was thinking the same thing. I've never had any adverse effects w/ 5 hour but I have a pretty high caffeine/stimulant tolerance.

Energy drinks aren't going to do much harm to you as long as you're drinking them in moderation. Each energy drink bottle specifically says not to drink more than 3 a day. And I'm willing to bet that most of the deaths involving energy drinks are people chugging multiple drinks within a short time, and then over exerting their bodies all at the same time.

As with just about any thing, it's fine in moderation. Abuse that, and well, you're an idiot.

When I was a kid, our toys had glass in them, sharp metal edges, there were no orange tips on toy guns, nothing had padded corners, and we even played with mercury...yet I lived.

Buncha sissy pansy-girls these days.

Much easier to prove harm from a physical object ("oh crap, he's got buckyballs in his guts") than from something meant to be ingested. The drink manufacturer can always argue "oh there was some underlying medical issue at work."

Better yet, what about guns. There's always a few stories each year where some kid was messing around with their dad's gun and accidentally blew their sibling/friend's brains out. Now before anyone gets sand in their vagina, I'm not advocating we ban guns too. Though it does illustrate what happens when parents fail to secure dangerous objects, or don't teach their kids about the dangers. I guess it's just easier to take things away from responsible people to protect the stupid ones.
