I've got a Speedstream 2624 Router/access point. I am unable to get a stable signal to the top floor of my house (It's stuck in the basement cuz two PCs are wired down here, and one wireless upstairs). How does this routers performance compare with other wifi routers/APs that are on the market? Because I'd rather get a new router then some kind of a signal strengthener.

Compare to other 802.11b Entry Level Wireless Cable/DSL Routers it is usually slightly better.

It is equipped with 5dbm antenna. Most others have 2-2.2dbm antennae.

For your needs a lower gain antenna might actually help. 0 dBi would be a circle or a ball of coverage. The higher the gain, the more concentrated and flatter the pattern. Holes in the coverage start appearing at the top of the cell. Try changing the polarization of the dipole, moving it to a horizontal position and see if that helps. If your going straight up then you may be hurting your coverage with the "better" antenna.
