sidewinder not being detected

i have an old sidewinder gamepad nonusb, and recently after i reformated, it would not get recognized in xp when i try to add it in game controllers. it worked before with the same hardware and winxp, just not ever since i reformatted.
i plugged the controller into the soundcard(santa cruz) when the system was on once, but i dont think that killed the gameport, it still says the gameport is working fine in device managers, and the sound works fine too, so i dont think the sound card is fried or anything.

any ideas?

Have you tried going to the game controller properties and choosing the auto-detect microsoft sidewinder option? And, obviously, make sure the gamepad is set to gamepad and not pass-through.
