Their privacy policy doesn't scream anything out at me, but why would you have to install software for something that could easily be 100% web-based?

All signs point to spyware...damn, I thought I might be able to get some good deals through it. see here

SideStep - Moderate - Travel-related search engine watches searches, sends info to SideStep, and pitched travel options for the SideStep site.

When in doubt, throw it out...

Like M4H said, why install something that you can do online just as easily at Travelocity or Expedia or directly on the airline/hotel website?

Sidestep is actually better, in that it offers the fares direct from the airlines, and so they are often cheaper than fares available from Expedia or Travelocity.

Are the prices better than those directly from the airline (I.e., United.com, usair.com, etc...)??? I fly 20+ times per year and do all my own travel arrangements online. I've rarely (if ever) noticed a price difference between the airline website and travelocity/expedia...

And what about the original spyware question -- is it clean?

Well, Adaware says it's spyware. Spybot S&D says it's (parasitic) spyware.

don't worry, it probably just pipes all your info direct to the government, cutting out the middleman.

It does appear to be spyware, but it is benign as far as I can tell.

I travel even more than you, but most of it is through a corporate travel agency. Even so, I have indeed found that airlines' own websites are in fact cheaper than Expedia/Travelocity. As far as I can tell, Sidestep does not actually produce cheaper fares than going directly to the airlines' websites.

Expedia and Travelocity are not that cheap at all. I prefer going JetBlue if I fly (I usally only fly to Florida) and using Hotwire.com for everythign else, but the thing that sucks about hotwire is that you dont know what you are exactly buying until your actually bought it, which is fine if you have an open scheduale.
