sidemounting a CDROM drive with no safety clips on the tray

Ok folks,

I've searched the web and haven't really been able to find an answer, maybe because I don't really know what I'm looking for.

My problem is this:
I have a Yamaha CRW-F1 that's been put in a rack-mount server. Only problem is the server, when rackmounted, has to be laid sideways, meaning the CDROM drive is vertical instead of horizontal. This shouldn't be an issue except the Yamaha drive doesn't have those little safety clips on the left hand side (when looking at the CDROM drive) that keep the CD locked in place. So whenever a CD is put in the drive, the CD doesn't sit properly in the tray and the drive doesn't even detect a CD at all.

My question is, short of removing the server from the rack and putting it horizontal, is there anything I can do to fix this issue? Do they sell little attachable clips for CDROM drives that don't have them? Could I remove the tray from this one and install another one in it's place?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
C!X

Too bad, that's a kewl drive. If it has the clip slots I donut see whey you couldn't snatch some off another tray. I personally would not try to replace the tray but would prefer getting/waiting for a different model with similar features and using a common one in the in the meantime if necessary.

There's not really any places for the clips to attach to. I don't even know if the term "safety clips" is correct. Are they called something specific, like "sidemont clasps" or something?

Is it feasible to drill a hole into the tray and attach clips that way?

I don't know if we'll be able to get a new drive because this is for work and was bought on a PO through Dell. The drive is also SCSI since it had to go into a PowerEdge server, and I think this might be the only >24x internal SCSI CDRW that Dell stocks.

Any other ideas? TIA

Retaining tabs?

Well, if you are determined to void your warranty and can get some tabs off another tray then super glue might be an option. Can't you just exchange it for a different model, even if slower? Do you even use the laser labelling feature? Have you contacted Yamaha? I bet they could replace the tray or provide a compatible one with clips if you want to DIY.

Do this: Make some contraption with duct tape. This will probably fix it. If it doesn't go panhandle on the street for about 20 minutes and you should have enough money to buy several more cdrom drives - they are cheap as dirt these days.
