Sidebar, no way to turn it permanently off?

No matter what I do in clicking to close the sidebar it just keeps coming back. If I open a thread in a new tab, the same tab, or even reload the same tab, the sidebar is there. Is there no way to turn this off globally?

I am running Linux Mint and using Google Chrome, both 64-bit.
