Well, i was looking for KotOR II and Bloodlines at Bargain Bin prices [they ain't there yet] and i ran across and purchased Pirates! for $19.77

Impulse buy
:Q

i haven't heard much about it since it was released and i guess it wasn't that popular . . .

Any good? I am guessing RTS/RPG . . . adventure? . . . Strategy?

What's the learning curve like?

it took me forever to get into KoTOR - i am generally "FPS only" but am willing to try new GOOD types of games.

Comments!?!

I might have to make a trip to Wally's World. :)

I played before and enjoyed it.

I don't know if I would compare it to a RTS game, you really only have 1 ship and ships you take over, but only 1 ship in combat, IIRC. Also turn based too if you go on land into combat, IIRC. It also has a little bit of side scrolling sword combat, 1 vs 1.

Wish I could give you more detailed information, but been a long time.

Just install it and start playing. :p

a long time?

this is the remake - 2005 . . .

i believe it was $50 not too long ago.

But you are saying it is worth playing

so it is RPG with mini-RTS elements?

steep learning curve?

Last month could be a long time for me. ;) :p

Steep learning curve, I would say no.

A RPG game to me is like KoToR, Baldur's Gate, etc. So, not really IMO;

Oh, enjoy the dancing too, if you choose to. :D

You'll have better luck getting info from there than me. :( Or hopefully someone with a better memory than I will come along.

I have it and I thought it was a fun game. I played it a ton for a few months and still play it every once in a while. You basically roam around the Caribbean visiting towns and waging war on whoever you want: England, France, Spain, Holland, or other pirates. When you fight other ships, I believe you can fire from any of the ships in your fleet. Ship battles are more time based than turn based because you only have to wait to reload your cannons before you can fire again. You can also choose to board the enemy ship, duel with the other ship's captain, and commandeer his ship if you win. If you choose to go on land, you can find buried treasure or sack towns (turn based combat). As microAmp mentioned, you can dance with the daughters of the various governors of towns and eventually marry them if you want. I think it's definitely worth buying for $20.

Most certainly worth $20, and I'm very cheap when it comes to games. And I'm going to be hunting those same games in the Bargain Bins as well =)

Pirates! is a fun game. There's pretty much no learning curve, in a way you are doing the same few things over and over, but you can do those things in so many different ways. And it's fun to do things and see the impact it has on the world. The game is very well presented and it's easy to kill a lot of time with it. I still play it once in a while. It's pretty much what you expect from a sid meier game.

Thanks for the replies. The review gave it 9.2

So, i opened and installed the game . . . looks like it will involve a LOT of time. . . . . graphics are "fair" compared to the latest games [but probably waay better than the original] . . . you can use lots of AA/AF [i think, so far].

i am almost done with FEAR and this looks like my next game. . . . d/l'ing the patch now.

It is still $50 at stores in my area.

It should be. I loved KOTOR but after I finished KOTOR II, I was very disappointed.

I got it for $19.99 at Compusa BTW several months ago.

It's fun, but it gets pretty repetetive and long after a while.

is there an "ending"?

how long does it take?

IIRC, the goal of the game was to track down the members of your family stolen into captivity. I think there were six of them. You can continue to play, but as your character ages your skills decrease.

Nah, mostly your crew just gets more and more unhappy and you have to find more and more gold to appease them. Eventually, it's impossible and you have to retire.

the manual is 140 pages
:Q

i am 1/3rd the way thru after falling asleep [literally] on it last night.

Evidently, you "retire" your captain by age 42-54 [hopefully to the Hall of Fame or better he becomes a Governor] . . . it is Very RPGish as you have 'skills' to develop . . . .evidently there are "hidden" super-ships as you build your fleet . . .

has anybody played to a "conclusion"?

i always wanted to be Jacque Cass, Scoundrel of the High Seas :p

:D

Uhh, yes, there is a goal of finding your missing family members, and yes, your skills do decrease as your age (particularly sword fighting, you become much slower). Once you find all your family members, the story part of the game is more or less over, though you can still keep playing until you want to retire.

Has Sid Meier ever made a bad game?

That answer alone should be enough for you to make a decision on this game.
