it is believed (believed because the process was done long before even the bible was written) it was done to stop masturbation, identify jews versus greeks, purifying ones soul of the evils of sex, and to make sex less exciting, thereby eliminating sex except for procreation.

Of course that's not accurate...

In dry desert climates, without regular bathing, the foreskin is prone to irritation and infection. The first man to do it probably cut off his own to save himself from the pain.

etech, you post in vain. Most of the fscking morons here probably don't even know that Islam has 2 main sects and a multitude of different local beliefs and practices. They're just racist, intolerant, and most importantly ignorantly stupid yet proud of their lack.

I am the one that started this thread and I still stand by my initial judgment of this tradition. FYI, I am very familiar with Muslim culture as my father was raised in Jordan, my mother in Lebanon, and I have been to Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel. To me, it doesnt matter who is performing this act, be it Shia Muslim, Suni Muslim, Christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, anyone... I still believe forcing children to participate is wrong. Now this is my opinion and of course you are entitled to your own opinion, but this does not give you warrant to label me as prejudice since I was familiar with all of the facts before I passed any judgment.

I thought the comparison between Shiites slicing their heads here and WWE entertainers razoring their scalps during performances was particularly, uh, cutting. 😉 One's Almighty is Allah the Omnipotent. The other's is Nielsen ratings. I don't think we're exactly in a high position of morality to be able to judge.

The children emerge unhurt, though I'm sure they do not understand. Like their fathers and forefathers before them, they'll go on.

General Comment: This practice is barbaric to be sure, but such rituals of varying degrees of barbarity occur throughout the world. My objection to this thread in general and particularly the comments of MichaelD, is that the intent of this thread is one of: Muslims = evil.

This sheit is sick <- and I am a Muslim living in NYC. This has to be part of their BS culture and not part of the religion becasue I have never heard of this horrible act against children. Looking at those men beating themselves is also sick. This is just part of the reason as to why Islam is breaking down. Sick bastards. As to circumcision it is required by ALL males to go through this surgery.
