Sick Plextor? Or bad media?

I wanted my friend to have a really good CD Burner so that I didn't have to troubleshoot it all the time when he burned bad disks. Well I have spent more hours working on the Plextor drive I recommended than any other Burner I have ever used (usually its really easy to tell if it screwed up or not).

The drive won't flash. It comes back with different error messages. Most of the time its something like 8:1B:0 or something like that.

Also using several different brands of CD-RW's and DirectCD, it can take as long as and hour and a half to get finished and when it does it has an error code 0117 or something like that. Could it just be bad media? I tried the same media with InCD and it ended up working sometimes the first time and sometimes the second time (I believe it was marking bad sectors with the first time, but it still took less time to format and verify it twice than once with DirectCD).

Anyone have any ideas? Is this just a bad drive or is it having some form of compatibility issues.

The OS is Win98(not SE) and the mobo is a KT7A with a 1ghz Duron. No overclocking. The burner is on the secondary IDE as Master all by itself.

Yeah the firmware.

I have the only firmware upgrade that is on the plextor site for the 16/10/40 drive.

I have never heard of plextor drives having issues with their firmware upgrades so I thought this to be strange. I have already sent my support email to plextor and am waiting for their response (hopefully tomorrow). These are very good friends and I really hate to recommend something that has problems. And it has happened several times over the years with equipment that I know is a known really good brand and model (I will experiment with lower cost stuff if it has good recommendations, but I don't experiment with his system ever).

can only suggest you double check the basics.
have you turned off DMA for the drive & removed any media in the drive before trying to flash?
are you using the correct windows flasher?

No, I was just formatting blank CD-RW's. That is where I have the biggest problem. We haven't had any problems copying data or music, just those DirectCD disks.
